The Association of Phoneticians and Phonologists in Nigeria (APPN) is an academic forum founded in 2019 to facilitate scholarly engagements in phonetic sciences and media communication. Members of the association are in several higher institutions, media stations and communication agencies in Nigeria. The association comprises thoroughbred professionals of public communication in Nigerian languages, Nigerian dialects, varieties of English, transcribers and translators of speech, including sign languages, trainers of non-clinical speech impairments like stuttering and analysers of voice, using acoustic tools like Wasp, Praat and Elan.
The Association publishes the Journal of the Association of Phoneticians and Phonologists in Nigeria (JAPPIN); one volume each year, since 2020. The key functions and major contributions of the association are to:
Promote scholarship and protect the interest of phoneticians, phonologists and elocutionists in ways that guarantee their productivity and academic promise
Facilitate innovative research through the collection, annotation, transcription, documentation, and publication of phonological data of major and minor Nigerian languages and dialects; as well as of Pidgins, other foreign languages and varieties of English
Collaborate with relevant academic, educational and professional bodies to promote knowledge and practice of apt, native-like and intelligible pronunciations of Nigerian languages, Pidgins, English and others by organising series of workshops and seminars for members of the association and non-members who are trainers of pronunciation in especially primary and secondary schools in Nigeria
Engender innovative, pragmatic and philosophical engagements relating to the challenges of oral communication apparatus of especially online social media tools like the google speak, voice automation and robotics to stimulate interest in the field of phonetics and phonology and demystify the perceived pedagogical complexification around the spoken language in both the real world and the classroom spaces
To encourage phoneticians and phonologists in Nigeria to collaborate with scholars in other fields to investigate, and publish ground breaking research in the rare field of phonological Sciences using methodical and methodological perspectives that are cross-disciplinary, multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary in nature
To encourage postgraduate studies in the area of phonetics and phonology in order to increase the supply and improve the quality of professionals of public communication including teachers and researchers of phonetics and phonology in Nigeria
